Seahawks beat Patriots

An ironclad defense and an unstoppable attack: Seattle didn't just win the game, they took over the biggest party in sports

The Seattle Seahawks exacted revenge on the New England Patriots on Sunday, defeating them 13-29 in Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara to win their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in 11 years.

It was the dream Super Bowl for the Seahawks, as they dominated from start to finish with their favorite weapons. Their defense, nicknamed ‘Dark Side’, emulated the exploits of the 2014 champion ‘Legion of Boom’ against the Denver Broncos and completely nullified Drake Maye and the Patriots.

Kenneth Walker was a ground scorer and kicker Jason Myers was a force to be reckoned with with five of five field goals.

Myers broke the record for field goals scored in a Super Bowl and also the record for points in a season (206) for a Seahawks team that culminated an outstanding year.

Quarterback Sam Darnold was crowned NFL champion in his first year in Seattle and vindicated himself after walking out the back door of the Minnesota Vikings.

He finished with 202 yards thrown with one touchdown pass and had a spectacular Kenneth Walker as a great ally.

The running back rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries and was among the few to find light on the Patriots defense in the first half to put the game away.

Drake Maye, the second-youngest quarterback to play in a Super Bowl, paid for the stress.

He was intercepted twice and totaled his 202 yards and two touchdown passes only late in the game, with the Patriots already out of a chance to win.

Big day in Santa Clara

It was a great day to play soccer in Santa Clara.

With 18 degrees Celsius and sunshine, Levi’s Stadium hosted a duel between the best defense in the league, the Seahawks, against the second best offense, the Patriots.

And the game was very tense, deadlocked, with Seattle’s defense putting constant pressure on Maye.

Sam Darnold was more daring than Maye, although it was not his passing that made the difference, but the ground power of Kenneth Walker and the foot of Jason Myers.

The Seahawks’ first drive ended with their 33-yard field goal to make it 0-3.

Walker was almost alone in finding light on the Patriots’ defense. Two runs, of 20 and 29 yards, shredded the Pats and opened the way for the second of three field goals scored by Myers.

The 0-9 first half score reflected the Seahawks’ clear superiority.

The Patriots managed only four first downs in the first half.

Maye connected on six of his eleven passes and his team could only muster 51 yards in two very blocking quarters that left the game in Seattle’s favored lane.

The rhythm is provided by Bad Bunny

The man in charge of giving rhythm to the Santa Clara game was the star of the halftime show, Bad Bunny.

The Puerto Rican star brought to the most important stage in the world of sports a repertoire entirely in Spanish, something never seen in the 60-year history of the NFL’s grand finale, and made the more than 68,000 spectators, of dozens of different nationalities, dance.

He sang, danced and entertained the long list of celebrities present at Levi’s Stadium, including Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton and actors Kevin Costner and Adam Sandler.

Seahawks party

The script did not change in the second half. The Patriots could not find separation to offer passing options to Maye, nor space in the middle to attack on the ground.

The Seahawks followed their plan. Ball in Walker’s hands and power to the run.

It was enough to get as close as the 41-yard line.

Myers, flawless, broke the record for field goals made in a season and increased the lead to 0-12.

The ‘Dark Side’ continued to distress Maye, who ended up committing the fumble that, as the third period ended, certified Seattle’s win. Forced by Derick Hall and recovered by Byron Murphy, it gave the ball to the Seahawks at the 37-yard line.

And Seattle didn’t hesitate to put the nail in the coffin. Darnold connected on a 16-yard line to AJ Barner, his first touchdown pass of the night, to push Macdonald’s team’s lead to a tough 0-19 with 13.24 to play in the fourth period.

With no pressure and nothing to lose, Drake Maye found the 35-yard TD pass to Mack Hollins that prevented the first shutout victory in Super Bowl history.

It remained little more than an anecdote.

New England’s young QB committed another fumble shortly thereafter, which Uchenna Nwosu took advantage of to go 45 yards for the 7-29 TD.

Rhamondre Stevenson’s seven-yard touchdown reception on Maye’s pass was only good for the stat sheet.

The Seahawks defended their comfortable lead until the fireworks lit up Levi’s Stadium and certified the second title in their history.
