Thirty years after the tragic death of Selena Quintanilla, her widower Chris Perez remains a figure deeply linked to the legacy of the iconic “Queen of Tex-Mex”.

Although he has rebuilt his life in many ways, Selena’s imprint remains indelible both in his personal memory and in the public perception of him and now, on the 30th anniversary of his beloved wife’s death, the musician broke the silence through his Instagram account.

Just on March 31, 2025, three decades after the tragedy that left him a widower, Chris Perez posted on his Instagram a photo of Selena on stage, wearing a black leather jacket and her hair down, accompanied by an emotional message.

“Selena inspires me and continues to inspire the world,” Chris said to begin his message.

“Through her life and music, Selena showed those who struggled – migrant workers, schoolchildren, domineering couples, teenagers rebelling against their conservative parents – that perseverance and hard work pay off, and that you can be ambitious without leaving your family and values behind.”

“Selena’s fans feel like they know her because she opened her heart to the world and let herself be known,” he added in his message.

“We watched her grow and continue to see her rise,” he continued.

“Selena represents the idea that it is possible to get to places most of us only dream of,” he also wrote.

In closing, Chris thanked “all his fans for keeping his legacy alive.”

“The best I can”

In addition to the photo of Selena, Chris added an image of the lyrics to the song Best I Can, by the Chris Perez Band.

“I can’t erase this lonely heart that won’t stop remembering.

Every day I live, I live with you and all the things we will never do.

Heaven holds a place for souls like mine.

I try to put my stormy past behind me.

You know it’s so damn hard to let you go.

I am here, with my heart in my hands.

Yes, I am…

Trying to live every day as best I can.”

Chris continues to honor his memory while balancing his music career, his role as a father and his place as part of one of the Latin world’s most memorable love stories.

Chris Perez, who in the 1990s was the guitarist for the band Selena y Los Dinos, secretly married the singer in 1992.

Their relationship, though brief, was profoundly significant.

The couple’s life was devastatingly interrupted on March 31, 1995, when Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar.

Since then, Chris has lived with the weight of that loss, but also with a constant commitment to honoring his legacy.

In 1998, Chris formed the “Chris Perez Band”, a musical project that allowed him to channel his pain through music.

His first album, Resurrection (1999), largely inspired by his relationship with Selena, won a Grammy for Best Latin Rock Album in 2000.

This recognition marked a high point in his musical career, demonstrating that he could stand out with an identity of his own, without letting go of his wife’s memory.

In addition to music, Chris was dedicated to sharing his personal story.

Wrote a book

In 2012, he published the book To Selena, With Love, an intimate and honest account of his relationship with the singer.

The book was warmly received by fans, who appreciated the sensitivity with which she told her story and how, through her words, she humanized the mythical figure that Selena has become over the years.

He recently broke his silence 30 years after Selena Quintanilla’s death: “When it all happened, I was so dead inside. All of that drained my energy at a very high level”.

Finally, over the years, I've allowed myself to let go and move on with my life. It's not about forgetting; it's about moving forward

Chris also rebuilt his personal life: in 2001 he married Vanessa Villanueva, with whom he had two children, Cassie and Noah.

Although the relationship ended in divorce in 2008, he maintains a close relationship with his children, whom he has protected from media scrutiny.

Today, in 2025, Chris resides in San Antonio, Texas. There he continues to be involved in music and has recently participated in projects such as the documentary Selena y Los Dinos, presented at the SXSW festival.

This documentary, directed by Isabel Castro, explores the band’s history and Selena’s lasting impact on Latin culture.

The wound of Selena’s loss

In recent interviews, Chris has expressed that, although the hurt over the loss of Selena never fully goes away, he has learned to live with it.

Chris Perez’s story continues to touch Hispanic audiences in the United States and around the world.

Her life is a testament to resilience, undying love and how such a painful loss can be transformed into a deep commitment to memory, art and family.

Thirty years after Selena’s death, he remains her most faithful guardian, proving that some loves truly cannot be forgotten.
