Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum received FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the National Palace, and the promise was set in stone: the start of the World Cup at the “Coloso de Santa Ursula” will be “historic and exceptional”.

From the heart of Mexico City, the message was clear and direct to the whole world, especially to our Hispanic community in the United States that already has its bags packed: June 11, 2026 will not be just any day. After a breakfast that Infantino described as “fantastic”, Sheinbaum assured that for the opening of the World Cup, logistics and spectacle are reaching levels never seen before.

“We are all Mexicans”: Infantino

What was most moving was the message of unity.

Infantino, who has been touring the Guadalajara and Monterrey venues during the Intercontinental Playoffs, put on his jersey and proclaimed:

“This World Cup is going to be a party for Mexico, because we are all Mexicans.”

For those who live on this side of the border, those words resonate loudly; it is the recognition that Mexican culture is the soul of this tournament.

The FIFA president did not arrive empty-handed.

In a moment of good humor, he presented Sheinbaum with the official set of referee cards.

“Yellow card or, if someone misbehaves, red card, watch out!” joked the manager, reminding us that in this World Cup, the eyes of the planet will be on the Mexicans.

El Azteca: The temple that is reborn

Infantino also witnessed the reopening of the Azteca Stadium last Saturday, where Mexico and Portugal played to a goalless draw in a friendly that served to test the new facilities.

Although the score remained at zero, the vibe in the stadium confirmed that the “Coloso” is ready for its third World Cup inauguration, a record that no other stadium in the world holds.

Positive vibes for El Tri!

President Sheinbaum did not miss the opportunity to send a message to the fans and to Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre’s team.

“We have to cheer for the National Team, so everyone with a good vibe in this World Cup,” he concluded.

With the opening match against South Africa just around the corner, the support of the green tide – both in Mexico and the USA – will be the driving force behind the team.

Are you going to travel to Mexico City for the inauguration, or are you going to set up a carnita asada in Houston, LA or Chicago to watch El Tri’s debut?
