“Yes, rather than, they should not celebrate, they should be cautious. That is the guidance given by the Foreign Ministry,” Claudia Sheinbaum stated at a press conference.

The President also clarified that the official celebrations will not be cancelled.

And that Mexican consulates in the United States will continue to hold commemorative events this year.

“In the consulates we always do the Grito and it will be done in all Mexican consulates around the world, not only in the United States, it is a celebration of our independence,” he emphasized.

To be coordinated with consulates

However, the Mexican president explained that, given the current conditions in the neighboring country, migrants were asked to approach their consulates.

In addition to coordinating with consular authorities on the safest way to commemorate the date.

“Under the conditions that exist at this time in the United States, it was said that they should approach the consulate and together make the decision,” he commented.

Claudia Sheinbaum also revealed that her government informed the U.S. authorities about the Mexican celebrations, without receiving an official response.

“And at the same time the communication was also made to the U.S. authorities, that it was Mexico’s Independence Day and that many countrymen celebrate it there,” he informed.

SRE warns of raids and repatriations

The call comes after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(SRE) warned on Thursday that Mexicans in the U.S. should avoid participating in events that put them at risk of arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

So far in Donald Trump’s administration, which began on January 20, 92,583 people have been repatriated to Mexico from the United States as of September 9.

Of these, more than 78,000 received assistance and protection from the SRE, according to EFE.
