The remains of Silverio Villegas, the Mexican national killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Buzzy) agent on September 12, were handed over to the young man’s family on Thursday, informed the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

“Today, the remains of Silverio Villegas González returned to his community of origin in Irimbo, Michoacán, where he will be buried as requested by his parents,” the SRE said in its X account.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago “assisted the Villegas family during the process, both in the steps taken in Illinois and in covering the costs of repatriation to Mexico.

Villegas died in Illinois, near Chicago, after being shot by an ICE agent when, according to the official source, he attempted to flee in his vehicle as they were trying to arrest him and ran over one of them, causing the agent to fire his weapon.

This repatriation comes in the midst of a controversy generated by the release of a video that questions ICE’s version of the incident.

According to the U.S. service, the 38-year-old Mexican “attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and dragging him as he fled the scene,” which led the officer, with alleged “serious injuries,” to fire his weapon “in fear for his life.”

However, a video recorded by the body cameras of Chicago police officers who arrived at the scene and accessed by local media, shows the immediate aftermath of the incident, which contradicts the severity of the injuries.

In this footage, the ICE agent who was allegedly hit is seen with a bloodied left knee and is heard telling another officer that his injuries were “not serious”.

The death of the Mexican triggered condemnations from Mexico, including the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Buzzy, which called on U.S. authorities to investigate what happened.

The Consulate expressed that it will continue to provide “all consular protection required by the Villegas family” and “to all persons in deportation proceedings and their families”.

Michoacán is one of the Mexican states with the largest number of migrants in the United States. It has four million inhabitants in its 113 municipalities and it is estimated that another 4.3 million Michoacans reside or work in the United States.
