On Sunday night, July 13, 2025, tragedy struck the city of Fall River, Massachusetts. A five-alarm fire partially consumed the Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility, leaving nine people dead and more than 30 people injured, including five firefighters who participated in the rescue.

The fire started around 9:50 p.m., and quickly spread through the south wing of the three-story building. Witnesses recounted scenes of desperation, with residents leaning out of windows and staff trying to evacuate people with limited mobility. Some had to be rescued by aerial ladders due to the dense smoke and the rapid advance of the fire.

At the time of the fire, approximately 70 residents lived in the property.

Emergency crews were able to evacuate most, but several did not survive the fire or transport to the hospital.

Of the more than 30 injured, at least one person is in critical condition.

The five injured firefighters suffered minor injuries and were released after receiving medical attention.

Many residents were transferred to local hospitals and temporary shelter centers, where they receive medical and psychological care and logistical support.

State and local authorities immediately launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

In addition to assessing whether the building’s security systems functioned properly.

Although there are no definitive results yet, failures in the automatic sprinklers or fire alarms are suspected.

Gabriel House, founded in 1999, had to comply with specific safety regulations for facilities housing dependent older adults.

This has raised questions about whether the protocols were properly executed.

The review will include recent inspection records, electrical conditions, as well as evacuation plans and emergency training of personnel.

Community and state response

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her sorrow for the tragedy and assured that the state will provide all necessary support to those affected and to the city.

In the meantime, the local community has turned to donation drives, temporary housing and psychological assistance to survivors and family members.

A family support center was set up in the chapel of St. Anne’s Hospital, where authorities are notifying victims’ families and coordinating reunions with survivors.

Many of these centers, although regulated, operate in older buildings where upgrading alarm and evacuation systems can be complex or costly.

For Hispanic families who entrust the care of their loved ones to these facilities, this case underscores the importance of verifying safety standards and demanding transparency in inspection reports.
