The paralysis of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) could be nearing its end. President Donald Trump has shown an unprecedented willingness to accept the increased use of body cameras for immigration agents, one of the main demands of the Democrats to free up funds for the agency, partially closed since last February 14.

Through a letter sent to Republican Senators Susan Collins and Katie Britt, and signed by “border czar” Tom Homan, the White House detailed a series of concessions to facilitate a bipartisan agreement.

White House conditions

Although Trump is willing to allow agents to wear cameras, the proposal contemplates a strict exception: undercover operations. In addition to the use of video devices, the government proposed:

  • Limit civilian immigration control actions.
  • Require visible and mandatory identification for all agents.
  • Expand congressional oversight over detention centers.

“The Administration has worked in good faith,” the missive assures, urging the opposition to stop “jeopardizing security” and move forward on fully funding DHS.

Pressure after tragedies in Minnesota

This openness of the Republican administration is no coincidence.

The Democrats’ tougher demands came in the wake of the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens by federal agents during protests against immigration raids in Minnesota.

These are the cases of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, two U.S. citizens who were protesting against immigration enforcement in Minneapolis.

Faced with this scenario, the Democrats demand that no arrests or searches be carried out without warrants and that the identity of the agents always be made public.

While negotiations continue in a “tug of war” in the Senate, citizens are already suffering the consequences.

The DHS shutdown has caused massive delays at U.S. airports due to a lack of security personnel, a situation that puts pressure on both parties to reach an agreement before domestic transportation collapses.
