U.S. President and First Lady Donald and Melania Trump welcomed hundreds of children to the White House on Monday to celebrate Easter Monday, which this year marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States but was also marked by uncertainty surrounding the Iran war.

In his opening speech, the Republican took the opportunity to brag about the rescue in Iranian territory of the two crew members of an F-15 fighter shot down by Tehran last Friday.

“What we did yesterday was rescue not one – we rescued two. We kept the rescue of the first one secret, and we were able to keep it that way for about a day, which improved the situation considerably. Those two pilots showed incredible bravery,” Trump declared from the balcony of the White House, decked out for the occasion.

But before the crowd of children, parents and the amount of decorations and preparations ready for the day’s activity, Trump, for a few minutes, wanted to put the focus on the protagonists of the event: the Easter eggs.

“I have to tell you, I came out and I was hoping we were going to talk about farmers. And we love our farmers. We were going to talk about a lot of different products. But you know what they want to talk about, this is about (Easter) eggs,” he added.

The tradition of celebrating a race in which children roll eggs across the grass with the help of a spoon on Easter Monday dates back to 1878, an idea of then President Rutherford Hayes, who decided to invite a group of children to play in the gardens of the presidential residence.

Prior to that, egg races were held on Capitol Hill, until excessive rowdiness and crowds led President Ulysses Grant to ban the event from the Congressional grounds for scenic reasons.

Almost a century and a half later, the scene has hardly changed: children are still competing to push colored eggs with wooden spoons, amidst laughter and shouts of encouragement.

In this case, the first lady also participated in some of the games with the children, which also included painting workshops and literary activities.

Several prominent figures from the Trump Administration – including FBI Director Kash Patel, National Security Advisor Stephen Miller, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and one of the President’s sons, Eric Trump – attended the event.

However, the day was marked by the Iran war, which Trump stopped to talk about every time he saw the press during the event.
