President Donald Trump sparked controversy again on Friday by launching harsh criticism against the 32 NFL teams for not selecting Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 Draft. Through his Truth Social platform, Trump called the owners “stupid,” claiming they overlooked an exceptional talent.

“What are the owners thinking, Deion was a superstar and a leader! Shedeur has phenomenal genes and is ready to succeed – he should have been selected in the first round!” wrote Trump, visibly upset. This reaction is part of a pattern of confrontations between Trump and the NFL, where the president has not hesitated to publicly express his displeasure with decisions that, in his opinion, do not reflect sports merit.

At 23 years old, Shedeur Sanders completed an outstanding season with the Colorado Buffaloes under the guidance of his father, former player and coach Deion Sanders.

Shedeur not only won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, but also broke records in air yards and passing efficiency.

Prior to the Draft, several predictions placed Sanders as a sure-fire first-round pick.

Primarily in the pick 20 to 32 range, with particular interest from franchises such as the Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, concerns about his adaptation to the professional system and his style of play led teams to opt for other prospects.

Shedeur was not selected in the first 32 picks, but still retains ample opportunity to be selected on the second day of the 2025 Draft.

Major moves are expected from teams in need of quarterbacks.

Beyond the athletic talent, Trump took the opportunity to again praise former NFL star Deion Sanders, calling him a “streetwise, wise and intelligent leader.”

He reaffirmed his sympathy for sports figures who connect culturally with young and minority voter bases.

He should have been drafted in the first round!

Political analysts consider that these gestures are not merely sporting.

Trump vs NFL

The relationship between Trump and the NFL has been contentious since his first term in office.

In 2017, Trump publicly urged sanctions against players who protested during the national anthem, sparking one of the most intense debates about politics and sports in the United States.

More recently, Trump has questioned the NFL’s racial inclusion and diversity policies implemented under the administration of commissioner Roger Goodell.

The current episode, involving Shedeur Sanders, reinforces the perception that tensions between Trump and the league are far from resolved.
