In the midst of the solemn atmosphere for the death of Pope Francis, which took place on April 21, 2025, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again become the protagonist of a new international controversy. This Friday, May 2, Trump published on his Truth Social account an image generated with artificial intelligence where he appears dressed as the Supreme Pontiff, on the eve of the Vatican conclave that will elect the next pope.
The image shows him with the traditional white cassock, mitre, golden cross and blessing gesture, with his right arm raised and his index finger extended, simulating a papal ceremony. The publication quickly went viral and provoked mixed reactions, both inside and outside the United States.
Message loaded with irony

The photo of Trump as the pope was accompanied by a controversial phrase that the president uttered last Wednesday at a press conference from the White House:
I'd like to be a dad. That would be my number one choice. No one would do it better than me
Donald Trump
Although many interpret his words as a joke, other sectors -especially in the Catholic community- have expressed their discomfort.
They consider it disrespectful to the Church and to the process taking place in the Vatican.
This Wednesday, May 7, the conclave to elect the new pontiff will be held.
U.S. Cardinals in Conclave

The United States will be represented by ten cardinals, including the influential Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York.
Trump not only mentioned him in his statement, but hinted at his personal preference for him to be the new pope:
“I should say there is a cardinal from a place called New York who is very good. We’ll see what happens.”
Dolan already participated in the 2013 conclave and received two votes.
Raymond Burke, known for his ultra-conservative approach, will also be present.
And Robert Prevost, appointed by Francis as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and recognized for his fluency in Spanish and his work with Latino communities.
