U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday, September 12, that, “with a high degree of certainty,” authorities have apprehended the person allegedly responsible for the murder of conservative commentator and activist Charlie Kirk, who died after being shot in the neck during an event on the campus of Utah Valley University in the city of Orem.
“I am informed with a high degree of certainty that the subject who committed this cowardly crime is already in custody. We will demand swift and full justice,” Trump wrote on his official Truth Social account, where he also thanked the public and law enforcement for their cooperation.
Charlie Kirk murder suspect arrested
Kirk was attacked on Wednesday afternoon, September 10, while participating in an outdoor lecture in front of hundreds of students.
The scene was recorded on video by several attendees, and the images show the exact moment when the activist falls after being shot.
Authorities later confirmed that he died in the hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
According to official reports, more than 7,000 tips were received in less than 48 hours thanks to the dissemination of photographs and a video of the alleged shooter, who was dressed entirely in black and, according to initial investigations, had fired from an elevated position.
Although the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Utah State Police have not yet publicly released the name of the suspect or the possible motive for the attack, several sources indicate that the detainee was located early Friday thanks to citizen cooperation and the tracking of security cameras in the area.
Crime has once again shaken the United States, where in recent years there has been a worrying increase in attacks against political figures and opinion leaders, both right and left.
Trump himself emphasized that point during his message, assuring that “political violence has no place in our country, and anyone who infringes on free speech will face the full weight of the law.”
Charlie Kirk, 31, was a founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, a group that promotes right-wing ideologies among college students.
Considered a key Trump ally, he had become one of the most influential voices of the conservative youth movement in the United States.
The Department of Justice and the FBI are continuing their investigation into the case and have promised to release more details in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Kirk’s family is expected to hold a public tribute in his memory over the weekend.
