U.S. President Donald Trump recently celebrated the cancellation of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” late-night show, calling it “good news” and attributing it to the comedian’s “low ratings.”

The cancellation came after Kimmel made controversial comments about the Sept. 10 murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a college event in Utah. The accused of the crime, Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested and faces first-degree murder charges.

In one of his broadcasts, Kimmel ironized about the impact Kirk’s death had on Donald Trump.

He criticized followers of the MAGA movement for “trying to make political capital” out of the case.

These statements generated a wave of criticism in social networks and led Nexstar Media Group -owner of ABC- to announce the end of the program and its replacement with new programming in affiliated markets.

Donald Trump reacted from his Truth Social account saying:

“Kimmel’s show, with its lousy ratings, is cancelled. Kudos to ABC for having the courage to do it.”

Trump praises Charlie Kirk

Furthermore, at a press conference in the United Kingdom alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Donald Trump denied that this was an act of censorship, assuring that the dismissal was “due to a lack of talent”.

“They fired Jimmy Kimmel primarily because of his poor ratings.”

“He is not a talented person. He should have been fired a long time ago,” the president said.

Donald Trump also used the occasion to pay tribute to Kirk, whom he described as “a great young man with an incredible future.”

He assured that “some people believed that one day I could be president”.

Maintains its confrontation with the media

This episode adds to Trump’s long history of clashes with media and entertainment figures.

These include his lawsuits against The New York Times and his criticism of other presenters such as Seth Meyers.

The president has repeatedly accused several media of “liberal bias” and of acting against him during his political campaigns (With information from Efe).
