The 6.5 magnitude earthquake registered this Friday morning in the Mexican state of Guerrero left two people dead, after authorities confirmed the death of a 50-year-old woman due to the collapse of her home, becoming the second fatality of the earthquake, after the previous death of an elderly adult during an evacuation in Mexico City.

The first victim had been confirmed hours earlier, when authorities reported that an elderly man died during the evacuation after tripping and hitting his head.

Deaths confirmed after earthquake in Mexico

The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, informed that the woman lost her life in the community of Las Minas, located between the limits of the port of Acapulco and the municipality of San Marcos, an area close to the epicenter of the earthquake, located about four kilometers southwest of this town.

“Unfortunately, we have a report of a woman who died due to the collapse of her home, a 50-year-old woman, and we will provide all the support to her relatives,” said the state governor.

According to the official report, the victim died when the roof of her house, built with sheet metal and asbestos, as well as the adobe walls, collapsed and fell on her during the earthquake.

The authorities detailed that, at the time of the earthquake, the woman was accompanied by a 90-year-old relative, who was unharmed.

So far, the identity of the victim has not been released.

Preliminary damage assessment in Guerrero

Salgado Pineda explained that the evaluation rounds continue in the municipalities of the Costa Chica region, one of the most affected areas.

Preliminary reports indicate that around 700 houses were damaged, of which 70 collapsed completely, mainly houses built with fragile materials.

In the tourist port of Acapulco, four people were reported injured with minor injuries caused by landslides and falling debris.

The authorities clarified that none of the injured persons were identified as tourists.

In Chilpancingo, the state capital, minor damages were reported, such as collapsed walls and superficial damage to some houses.

Hospitals, utilities and electricity

The governor confirmed structural damage to the ISSSTE hospital facilities in Guerrero, which forced the evacuation of patients and their transfer to other clinics.

In addition, the hemodialysis area remains suspended while safety evaluations are conducted.

For its part, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) informed that it activated its emergency protocol and that 75.93% of the electric service has been reestablished in Guerrero.

However, some communities express concern that the power outages could affect their drinking water supply.

Hours earlier, a 60-year-old man was reported dead in Mexico City, who died during the evacuation after tripping and hitting his head, making the woman from Guerrero the second confirmed fatality directly caused by the phenomenon.

Although state authorities indicated that the tourist flow continues without cancellations and that the Autopista del Sol remains open after the cleaning of landslides, they reiterated that the work of evaluation and attention to the affected people continues, while monitoring is maintained in the areas impacted by the earthquake.
