Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the investigation against Julio César Chávez Jr. for alleged organized crime and arms trafficking began in 2019.

However, the arrest warrant was issued until 2023. Sheinbaum stated that she had no prior knowledge of this order until the news of her arrest in the United States spread.

On July 2, 2025, Chavez Jr. was arrested in Los Angeles by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for being in the country illegally and for alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.

U.S. authorities reported that Chavez Jr. had entered on a tourist visa that expired in February 2024 and that he submitted fraudulent information on his application for permanent residency.

He is currently in expedited deportation proceedings to Mexico, where he will face charges of organized crime and arms trafficking.

Sheinbaum emphasized that, once the arrest became known, her government communicated with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which confirmed the existence of the arrest warrant.

The President assured that the corresponding protocols are being followed for Chavez Jr. to be deported and face justice in Mexico.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Chavez Jr. is considered a threat to public safety and linked him to the Sinaloa Cartel.

However, President Sheinbaum clarified that, in the security cabinet, no specific links to the cartel were discussed, and that the investigation in Mexico is focused on organized crime and arms trafficking offenses.

Chavez Jr.’s family issued a statement expressing their confidence in the boxer’s innocence and requesting respect for due process of law.
