Shein and Temu Prices Set to Rise This August — Here’s Why

Every package under $800 will be taxed

The “de minimis” exemption allowed packages of up to USD 800 to be imported duty and tax free, providing tax relief that benefited both consumers and companies such as Shein and Temu. This rule was suspended for China and Hong Kong last May 2, 2025 by a White House executive order.

And on July 30 of this 2025, President Donald Trump signed a new executive order extending this global suspension for all countries as of August 29, 2025. This measure will allow Customs to apply full tariffs on all international shipments, regardless of value.

Platforms popular with Hispanic consumers such as Shein and Temu have already announced price increases since April in anticipation of these changes.

According to recent reports:
Temu’s U.S. sales fell 23% in May, and Shein fell 11%.

Both have redirected investments to markets such as Europe, where their sales grew: Temu by 63% and Shein by 19%.

Meanwhile, competitors such as Amazon have surged in U.S. sales (up 11.6 % in July).

As of August 29, packages will be subject to one of two tariff schedules:

Ad valorem, based on the tariff rate of the country of origin.
Fixed fee, between 80 and 200 USD depending on the country.

For six months, postal shipments will have a grace period with flat rates.

Then, a full customs declaration will be required, which will result in delays and additional costs.
