Tyler Robinson, accused of the murder of ultraconservative activist Charlie Kirk, listened with an impassive gesture on Tuesday, September 16, the indictment against him, which was read to him in his first hearing before a district court in the state of Utah.

During the preliminary hearing, Judge Tony Graf and the Utah prosecution agreed that the start of Robinson’s trial, for which the death penalty for aggravated murder has been requested, will take place on September 29.

In addition, the magistrate ordered that a public defender be assigned to Robinson, 22, since he does not have a private attorney to defend him.

Robinson appeared at the hearing via video call, dressed in a suicide vest and only spoke when asked to appear in court by stating his full name, Tyler James Robinson.

Defendant Tyler Robinson appeared to listen intently to the indictment read by Judge Graf.

The indictment read includes seven counts, including one count of aggravated murder, two counts of obstruction of justice and two counts of tampering with a witness.

Meanwhile, Chad Grunander, head of the criminal division of the Utah County Attorney’s Office, said his office has just filed notice that it will seek the death penalty.

During the first hearing at which Tyler Robinson’s charges were read, the prosecution asked Judge Graf for an order prohibiting Robinson from being able to refer to or have contact with Erika Kirk, widow of the activist close to President Donald Trump.

Kirk, founder of the conservative organization Turning Point, was leading one of his regular debate events on September 10 at Utah Valley University when he was shot in the neck and killed.

His funeral will be next weekend and is scheduled to be attended by a large base of supporters and allies, including President Donald Trump himself.
