Legendary Argentine coach Gerardo Martino has been confirmed as the new coach of Atlanta United FC in Major League Soccer (MLS). The club’s official announcement, dated Thursday, November 6, 2025, confirms that Martino has signed a contract through the 2027 season.

For Hispanics in the United States, this news represents a new chapter full of expectations: an internationally renowned coach, with MLS experience and a deep understanding of the Latin American scene, returns to the bench of an iconic franchise.

Why Atlanta United is betting on Martino

The club’s decision is no accident.

The 2025 season was disastrous: Atlanta United managed just 28 points in 34 games, finishing second to last in the Eastern Conference.

Faced with this critical scenario, the club dismissed its previous coach, Ronny Deila.

Martino, who already coached the team between 2017-2018 and led them to the MLS Cup title in 2018, appears as the best bet to return to prominence.

Martino knows the club, the city and the league. In his presentation, he stated:

“Our goal will be to build a winning team that will make our fans proud.”

This is a different project from my first stint

After his first stint at Atlanta, Martino coached national teams (Argentina, Mexico).

And most recently Inter Miami CF, a team he led to win the Leagues Cup 2023 and the Supporters’ Shield 2024 before resigning in November 2024 for personal reasons.

His combination of accomplishments and MLS experience makes him an ideal strategist for a franchise looking to reboot.

What’s next: challenges and opportunities

Martino is taking on an important challenge:

Rebuild a team that was the worst in its recent history and make it competitive in the Eastern Conference for next season.

Signs point to a renewed focus, with a contract until 2027 and clear expectations.

For the U.S. Hispanic reader, this means paying attention to the schedule, following the team’s movements (players, tactics, press) and seizing the moment to get more involved in MLS as a space of Latino pride.
