U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated on Friday, November 7, the 25% drop in Thanksgiving dinner basket prices announced by Walmart, the leading supermarket chain, which he attributed to its good economic management and “almost non-existent” inflation.
“Walmart announced just two days ago. This year it will be 25% cheaper to celebrate Thanksgiving than last year with Sleepy Joe Biden. (…) That’s a big difference,” he said during a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the White House.
Thanksgiving dinner will be cheaper, Trump says
Trump, who returned to power last January on a promise to lower high food and gasoline costs, insisted that this rebate is “representative of the rest of the prices, including energy prices, which are way down from last year.”
“Inflation is almost non-existent. We have inflation at a very low level, while, as you know, during the Biden Administration we had the worst inflation in the history of our country,” the Republican reiterated.
Trump continually blames the former Democratic president for the “dismal” performance of the economy prior to his second term.
Year-on-year inflation in the U.S. was 3% last September, according to the most recent release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which stopped monitoring these indicators due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays of the year in the United States, where millions of households gather on the last Thursday of November to commemorate the iconic dinner that, according to tradition, was shared by European settlers and native peoples in 1621.
While Walmart announced that this year its Thanksgiving basket would cost less than $40 for about ten diners, 25% less than in 2024, the menu composition has been reduced from 29 to 24 items.
Those missing in 2025 include onions, sweet potatoes, muffin mix, marshmallows, whipped cream and traditional pecan pie.
The current basket does contain traditional rolls, fresh cranberries, pumpkin and the iconic turkey, which is the lowest priced since 2019, according to Walmart, the nation’s largest grocery chain.
