Legendary former world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce has a clear bet on who will take the baton from Saul “Canelo” Alvarez when the tapatío retires from professional boxing: Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez.

In an interview with the media in Mexico City, Arce acknowledged that he is “somewhat disconnected” from the current scene, but did not hesitate to mention the champion from Sinaloa as the boxer who could lead the new era of national boxing: “Probably Sugar Nuñez, from Los Mochis. He is the one that comes to my mind”, declared the five-time champion.

Born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez made history in May 2025 by winning the IBF super featherweight world title.

This after defeating local Masanori Rikiishi in Japan by unanimous decision.

The win put him on the international map and, months later, he successfully defended his belt against Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz in his homeland.

Sugar Nunez, known for his offensive style and powerful punching power, has attracted great interest among fans in both Mexico and the U.S. Hispanic community.

They see in him a new figure worthy of representing Latin boxing.

Although his next fight is not yet confirmed, all indications are that Sugar Nunez could face WBO super featherweight champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete in a unification fight.

The fight, scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, would be a battle between Mexicans with worldwide repercussions.

Experts assure that the winner would consolidate his position as the top Mexican boxing star in the post-Canelo era.

Latino pride is still alive and well

For the U.S. Hispanic community, Sugar Nunez’s success represents more than just titles:

It is a symbol of identity, effort and Mexican heritage.

Fans in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago or Houston follow closely every step of the Sinaloan, sharing his story on social networks as a new source of national pride.

In short, Travieso Arce not only pointed to a possible successor to Canelo, but confirmed what many already perceive:

Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez is the face of the new Mexican boxing, a young talent that unites Mexico and the Latino community in the U.S. under the same banner of passion and glory.
