The northern and Midwestern United States will face snowfall and storms that will complicate travel this Thanksgiving eve, the National Weather Service(NWS) reported, which also forecast warmer than usual for the rest of the country.

The NWS warned that “travel conditions will be challenging” across the Northern Plains, Great Lakes and East Coast heading into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, when officials are forecasting the busiest season in 15 years, with more than 81 million travelers through next Monday.

The agency forecast “heavy snow” and “blizzard conditions” for the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region on Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday.

As well as “another strong storm for the Plains, Great Lakes and Northeast this weekend.”

“Strong winds are expected with these systems, adding to travel difficulties,” the NWS warned.

Storms are forecast as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports the “busiest Thanksgiving travel season in 15 years.”

With more than 360,000 flights expected from November 24 to December 2.

At least 860 flights were delayed and nearly 40 were canceled in the United States Wednesday morning, according to tracking site FlightAware.

In contrast to the snowfall, above-average temperatures will affect “much” of the eastern United States, although later days will bring more windy and cold conditions, the NWS said in its latest report.

“Polar air will travel southward and set up across the central and eastern U.S. with temperatures dropping to freezing as far south as the Florida Panhandle by Friday morning.”

“However, temperatures are still warmer than normal in New England,” the weather service said.

Likewise, the eastern U.S. will be warmer than usual for the holiday period, although the Pacific Northwest will have periods of mountain snow and rain within the next couple of days, according to the NWS.
