Security and logistics remain under review

The organization of the 2026 World Cup was once again at the center of the debate after media and security sources mentioned alleged pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for FIFA to exclude Mexico as a host country, citing security concerns in Mexican territory. However, to date, there is no public evidence or official communication confirming such a formal request to the international body.

Even so, federal sources consulted by journalists have indicated that the U.S. government is analyzing advanced security and monitoring technologies that could reinforce stadiums during the tournament in the three host nations: the United States, Canada and Mexico. These analyses are customary prior to international events and are part of the joint logistics of the host countries.

Despite the rumors that circulate from time to time on networks and in some media, FIFA reiterated in November 2024 that Mexico officially maintains its three 2026 World Cup venues:

Mexico City (Azteca Stadium) – inauguration venue
Guadalajara (Akron Stadium)
Monterrey (BBVA Stadium)

In a recent statement, FIFA described rumors of cancellation as “false” and confirmed that preparations are continuing on schedule.

In addition, the organization ratified that both Guadalajara and Monterrey will host the intercontinental playoff, a phase where the last tickets to the 2026 World Cup will be disputed.

This reinforces Mexico’s key role in the tournament.

Why travel alerts exist

The United States and Canada maintain travel alerts in some areas of Mexico, as has been the case for years due to regional security situations.

However, these alerts do not mean the cancellation of international sporting events, such as the 2026 World Cup, but recommend precautions to citizens.

Historically, there is only one precedent for the elimination of a World Cup venue:

Colombia 1982, who resigned for internal security and organizational capacity reasons.

Mexico, on the other hand, has successfully hosted World Cups in 1970 and 1986.

Is there anything to worry about?

For the time being, no.

Mexico continues to prepare stadiums, infrastructure and logistics and maintains coordination with the United States and Canada as part of the tri-national plan.

For Hispanics living in the U.S. – especially those planning to travel to Mexico – this confirmation is key:

Matches remain on schedule.
FIFA rules out cancellations.
Hotels, flights and packages are sold normally.

Fans can continue with their plans to either attend in person or follow the tournament from the U.S., where a huge commercial and cultural activation is expected during the summer of 2026.

Although rumors of political pressure or security concerns may arise, FIFA’s official information is clear:

Mexico retains its 2026 World Cup venues, including the inauguration.

Preparations continue, and the tournament is progressing according to schedule.
