Group E of the 2026 World Cup, which Ecuador has been drawn in, brings together a historic giant like Germany, a rookie like Curaçao – the smallest country ever to reach an orbital tournament – and a difficult Ivory Coast, which has been showing great defensive solidity and is usually dangerous on the counter-attack.

On paper, Germany appears to be the favorite for first place, although it should not be forgotten that the Mannschaft has failed to advance beyond the group stage in two World Cups.

Ecuador in search of a miracle

Ivory Coast can be considered as Ecuador’s main rival for the second place, so the first match for the team coached by the Argentine Sebastian Beccacece, which will face the Africans on June 14, could be decisive.

Although, with the new format, third place may be enough to advance to the next round -the eight best third-placed teams advance- that position implies a double risk since, in addition to depending on what happens in other groups, a group winner will be waiting for them in the round of 16.

Curaçao’s first time

Curaçao, meanwhile, in its first World Cup participation, coached by veteran Dirk Advocaat, appears as the Cinderella of the group, whose main advantage is that it has nothing to lose, especially in its debut against no less than four-time world champion Germany.

“Curacao is a bit of a team that can come out with anything. But among our three opponents they tend to be the weakest opponent,” said German coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Ecuador’s squad includes players who have achieved success in Europe, such as defenders Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié, who form an outstanding central defensive pairing, and midfielder Moisés Caicedo.

Against a giant like Germany

Germany will be Ecuador’s last opponent in the group stage and Nagelsmann considers the South Americans to be the toughest opponent in the group.

“It’s a very good team,” he said and recalled that Ecuador achieved second place in the South American qualifiers.

In any case, both teams can reach this stage with their homework done if they win their first two matches.

Something similar happened the only time Ecuador and Germany met in a World Cup, in 2006, when they went into the match having won their matches against Poland and Costa Rica.

Beccacece has set a goal for the World Cup to improve in the offensive aspect.

In the South American qualifiers, in which Ecuador finished second, the team coached by the Argentinean coach stood out above all defensively, conceding only five goals in 18 matches.

The offensive harvest – although sufficient thanks to the solidity of the defense led by Pacho and Hincapié – was rather meager with only 14 goals scored.

Côte d’Ivoire, the weakest rival?

Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador’s first opponent, also shined on the defensive end in the qualifiers in which they did not concede a single goal.

With 26 points out of a possible 30 and an average goal of 25-0, the Ivorians qualified directly.

However, the 25 goals scored is somewhat misleading as 16 of them were scored against the Seychelles.

Therefore, it can be said that, like Ecuador, Côte d’Ivoire has shown its strength primarily on the defensive side.

Côte d’Ivoire’s forte in attack is counter-attacking.

Germany started the FIFA Cup qualifiers with a stumble against Slovakia, a 2-0 defeat on September 4, 2025, but then righted the ship and won all their matches.

The last match of the qualifying round was the rematch against Slovakia, which ended in a 6-0 victory.
