Nick Reiner, the main defendant in the murder of his parents, filmmakers Rob and Michele Reiner, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday in his first appearance since the crime.

He was arrested last Sunday on two counts of first-degree murder that could carry a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said.

For the moment, the motives that could have led him to commit the alleged crime are unknown. Relatives say that there was a family argument at a Christmas party at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien.

Director and actor Rob Reiner, 78, known for his work in films such as ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ was found stabbed to death Sunday afternoon at his Los Angeles home with his wife, producer and photographer Michele Reiner, 70.

The couple was found by their daughter, who arrived at the house after a masseuse called to let her know her parents were not answering the door, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Nick Reiner checked into a Santa Monica hotel on Sunday after the murders, according to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, reported Agencia EFE.
