Angelique Boyer has been for almost two decades one of the most important faces of the Mexican telenovela, the golden genre of the North American country that currently seeks to update itself by jumping to streaming platforms retaking iconic female characters such as ‘Doménica Montero’, protagonist played by the Franco-Mexican actress.

“I’m not afraid to revisit these stories (…) with such epic and iconic women that of course should be revisited. In this way we also unite past generations with the new ones, we generate a conversation about how it was for them to grow up in this world and how it should be for their daughters,” says Angelique Boyer in an interview with EFE.

What the artist known for her leading role in ‘Teresa’ (2010) is not afraid of is to perform a new version of Doménica Montero.

The telenovela premiered in 1978 by Televisa and is still remembered for having a female lead character with ambitions uncharacteristic for a woman of the time.

Doménica Montero is a businesswoman who, after being abandoned at the altar by her fiancé, decides to return to her hacienda in the Mexican state of Morelos.

This is to make amends for a new life on a ranch where men still play an authoritative role vis-à-vis the opposite sex.

“We are a pretty macho culture and we always put up these stereotypes.”

“Suddenly putting a character like mine who is much more sensitive and in tune with her feelings is a wise move.”

Explains Brazilian actor and co-star Marcus Ornellas, who plays Doménica’s romantic partner.

This story of broken and unrequited love is an opportunity not only to change some narratives about how men and women should behave.

But to show a different Mexico to Mexicans and to the millions of Spanish-speakers who follow telenovelas such as ‘Doménica Montero’.

“These earth-connected stories are super important.”

“I had the opportunity to be close to the public in the United States and feel the longing for their land and their culture.”

“These are windows for them, who consider it important to keep the melodramatic genre on the Mexican screen because it is a great representation of the country.”

In real life, Angelique Boyer is a woman unaccustomed to the countryside.

And more to get into his van when the shoots are over, he jokes.

Unlike his colleague Ornellas, who welcomes the return to territories such as Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).

Where he was raised among animals and environments full of nature.

“It’s reconnecting with my childhood, going back to riding horses (…) Where we shot is a remote village where there is no internet, so the phones don’t work.”

“We adjust to that small-town speed where there is no signal and communication is slower and more interesting,” comments the artist.

Although they were away from technology during filming, Angelique Boyer said she was very aware that the series is premiering on the Mexican streaming platform ViX.

An opportunity for “other accents to be heard”.

In addition to being able to reach homes around the world with “a universal language such as melodrama, even if you speak it in Korean, Turkish or Spanish”.

“The way we consume has changed and we have to adapt.”

“But it’s certainly an era in which we have to demand more of ourselves now with artificial intelligence advancing too fast.”

“A lot of human quality can be lost in some of our entertainment,” notes Angelique Boyer.
