Bret Hanna-Shuford, a well-known actor on the Broadway theater circuit in New York and a member of the social networking group Broadway Husbands has died at age 45, the family said Sunday.
Bret passed away on Saturday due to complications from a rare and aggressive type of lymphoma, in the Florida city of Orlando, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that this morning we said goodbye to the most wonderful man, husband and dad in the universe,” Bret’s husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, shared on the Broadway Husbands Instagram account.
“Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully, lovingly and surrounded by his family. It breaks our hearts, but we will continue to make him proud of us,” he added.

Bret had a long Broadway career, including appearances in “Beauty and the Beast,” “Wicked” and the original companies of “Paramour,” “Amazing Grace,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and Cirque du Soleil’s “The Little Mermaid.”
He and his husband, Stephen, created the joint social media page Broadway Husbands, where they documented their lives as gay parents.
Born in Beaumont, Texas, he graduated from Wagner College with a degree in theater in 2001. Subsequently, he developed an extensive Broadway acting career and performed across the country on Disney Cruise Line.
He also starred in several television series, including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2018), “Only Murders in the Building” (2023) and “The Good Fight” (2020). Bret also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Bret and Stephen met in 2007 and married in 2011 at Greenwich Town Hall in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2022, they welcomed their son, Maverick, recalls THR, reported Agencia EFE.
