Irish actress Jessie Buckley said that acting is like “drinking water” for her and that getting on stage helped her overcome an eating disorder and depression as a teenager, on BBC’s ‘Desert Island Discs’ radio show.

The 36-year-old, nominated for a Hollywood Oscar for her role in the film ‘Hamnet’ -for which she already won the British BAFTA and a Golden Globe-, said that music and theater are “essential” for her survival, as well as her dream and her passion.

During the program, aired this Sunday, the actress and singer – she was also nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2022 – recalled hard times when she received criticism for her appearance during her 17-year-old participation in the BBC talent contest ‘I’d do anything’, which was looking for an actress for the role of Nancy in the musical ‘Oliver!’.

“I had an eating disorder, and it took time, and it required a lot of help, and it was also depression…”, she explained, to reveal that she has been going to therapy since that age.

“I didn’t know how to be alive the way I wanted to be alive, and it was difficult, but not for a second do I regret it, and I think I’ve been able to transform it and recognize our vulnerabilities as human beings in the world,” she said.

“You can’t walk through life without being affected by things, but you can transform that into something that allows you to be more human and be more alive in the way you want to be,” added the artist, who was grateful to those who helped her along the way.

Recalling the fight in her early days, she said she is “very proud of that girl”. “I think she did very well and I don’t regret anything,” she added, reported Agencia EFE.
