Two South Florida police officers sued the production company of actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon alleging that their latest film ‘The Rip’, based on a real case, had told false details on tape.

The lawsuit was filed against Artists Equity last week in a South Florida federal court, according to documentation seen by EFE, and challenged that ‘The Rip’ and its promotional content showed “misconduct, lack of judgment and unethical behavior in connection with an actual police operation.”

The film presents the story of a group of officers who, during a raid on a hidden money operation in 2016, see their trust crumble when team members suspect others are trying to steal a large sum of money.

In it, Affleck and Damon play two of the police officers involved in the operation, and the actors themselves noted that they had interviewed the officers in preparation for the role.

However, the lawsuit points out that one of the protagonists in the film was never part of the operation and that several of the incidents recounted never happened.

“The film’s use of unique, non-generic details about the investigation, combined with its Miami-Dade setting and depiction of a narcotics team creates a reasonable inference that the officers depicted are the plaintiffs,” the brief reads.

The plaintiffs are Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, two police officers from the Narcotics Department who lead the operation, although neither of them is mentioned on the tape.

In their brief, both agents accuse the production company of “defamation” and request financial compensation for the damages caused.

In addition, they assured that they sent a letter in December 2025 asking not to release the film, reported Agencia EFE.
