The soccer party could be in the crosshairs of authoritarian regimes. FBI Director Kash Patel issued a chilling warning: hostile foreign governments plan to take advantage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to carry out acts of “transnational repression” on U.S. soil.

The goal is not the ball, but to silence, intimidate or even assassinate dissidents and people considered threats to their dictatorships.

The FBI does not play games.

Kash Patel confirmed that specialized counterintelligence teams will be deployed in more than 56 strategic locations, including host cities such as Philadelphia.

The objective is to detect undercover agents attempting to harass individuals who have sought refuge in the United States.

“They deliberately try to intimidate and silence those they consider a threat,” the bureau chief sentenced, stressing that the massive influx of tourists and global attention provide the perfect cover for these foreign intelligence operations.

The Iranian factor and “high risk” logistics

Soccer in the spotlight: The invisible battle of counterintelligence
One of the biggest diplomatic sticking points is the participation of the Iranian national team, placed in Group G with venues in Los Angeles and Seattle.

In an unprecedented move, the U.S. will allow the players to enter but has banned them from staying overnight on its territory for national security reasons.

Faced with this blockade, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has offered to receive the Iranian delegation on Mexican soil, turning the logistics of the tournament into a geopolitical puzzle.

Total Armoring: From Secret Service to FEMA

It’s not just the FBI that is on guard. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is leading a massive operation that includes:

Secret Service: Protecting mandataries and high flow areas.

FEMA: Prepared for any emergency or mass management.

Aerial Surveillance: Total coordination in the cities that will host the 104 matches of the tournament.

The World Cup will kick off on June 11 at the Azteca Stadium and will conclude on July 19 in New Jersey.

However, for the intelligence agencies, the toughest game has already begun in the shadows.
