All hope is gone. The name that an entire nation was looking for this Sunday in the official list of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) was simply not there. Luis Suarez, the Celeste’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most feared strikers on the planet, was left out of Marcelo Bielsa’s call-up for the 2026 World Cup.

With this decision, “El Loco” puts an end to one of the most epic and controversial World Cup careers in history. Here is Uruguay’s call-up list for the 2026 World Cup.

The Bielsa-Suárez divorce: A chronicle foretold

Although the Inter Miami striker had left the national team in September 2024 after a draw against Paraguay, on April 1 he lit a flame of hope by declaring that “I would never say no to the national team if they need me”.

However, the strained relationship between the star and the Argentine coach seems to have been the final nail in the coffin.

After his departure, Suárez held nothing back and harshly criticized Bielsa, accusing him of fracturing the atmosphere in the dressing room.

El Loco”, faithful to his style of not looking at names but at performance, decided to go for a total renovation in the attack, entrusting the goal-scoring quota to Darwin Núñez, Rodrigo Aguirre and Federico Viñas.

The end of a four-time World Cup legend

Luis Suarez bids farewell to the World Cup after leaving an indelible (and sometimes controversial) mark at South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

His numbers are from another galaxy: 69 goals with the charrúa jersey and moments that are already part of soccer folklore:

The Hand of God 2.0: His last-minute save against Ghana in 2010.

England’s executioner: His two goals in 2014 that silenced the Brits.

The controversial bite: The incident with Chiellini that sent him out the back door in Brazil.

Unlike his historic teammate Fernando Muslera, who was called up and will become the Uruguayan with the most World Cup appearances, the “Pistolero” will watch the tournament from home, probably from the stands of the U.S. stadiums he currently plays in with Inter Miami.
