Record amount: Boston Celtics sold for $6 billion

The Boston Celtics, one of the most legendary franchises in the NBA and American professional sports, have been sold for a record $6.1 billion, as confirmed by multiple official sources, including the organization itself and media outlets such as ESPN and The Boston Globe.

This sale not only sets a new standard for the NBA, but marks the largest transaction in U.S. professional sports history, surpassing the $6.05 billion paid by the Washington Commanders (NFL) in 2023.

The buying group is led by William Chisholm, an entrepreneur and billionaire who made his fortune in the private equity sector.

Chisholm is co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, a California-based firm focused on technology investments.

Chisholm, born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, said in a statement:

What about the current management?

Although the sale of the Boston Celtics has been approved, the team’s current CEO, Wyc Grousbeck, will remain in the position until the end of the 2027-2028 season.

Grousbeck and his family acquired the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million.

In other words, in 23 years, the equipment increased in value by more than 1,600 %.

“Bill is a natural choice. He loves the team, knows the city and has an excellent relationship with the current management,” Grousbeck said in announcing the deal.

With 18 NBA championships, the Boston Celtics are tied with the Los Angeles Lakers as the winningest teams in league history.
