The Mexican National Team plans to reopen the Azteca Stadium – currently being remodeled for the 2026 World Cup – with a high-level friendly match against a European team on the March 2026 FIFA Date. The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) is in negotiations with several European federations to finalize the rival, and the official announcement is expected in the coming months.

This match will mark the Tricolor’s return to the mythical Coloso de Santa Ursula, which has been modernized to meet FIFA standards as the inaugural venue for the World Cup. The stadium will also change its commercial name to Estadio Banorte due to a recent sponsorship agreement.

According to official sources, the Mexican National Team plans to play against Brazil and Argentina on the FIFA Dates of October (6 to 14) and November (10 to 18) 2025.

Under the technical direction of Javier “Vasco” Aguirre, the Mexican National Team seeks to recover its identity and competitive level.

Aguirre, who took over in 2024, has prioritized testing the team against elite opponents.

It also seeks to maintain a balanced roster of promising young players and players with international experience.

In recent words, the Mexican strategist expressed:

“These matches are key for the players to get used to the demands of a home World Cup.”

The FMF is also making progress in its joint work plan with Liga MX clubs.

This plan will be formally presented in May 2025, during the Owners’ Assembly.

The objective is to coordinate schedules, breaks and call-ups so that the Tricolor’s preparation does not interfere with the performance of the teams in their local and international tournaments.
