Atlanta Braves baseball player suspended for doping in MLB

Profar used chorionic gonadotropin

Major League Baseball (MLB) announced this March 31, 2025 the immediate suspension of Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar for an anti-doping violation. The outfielder tested positive for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a banned substance associated with increased physical performance and muscle recovery.

The sanction will be 80 games without right of appeal, in accordance with the joint drug program established between MLB and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA).

In an official statement released by the MLBPA, Jurickson Profar, 32, born in Willemstad, Curacao, expressed his surprise and disappointment at the outcome.

“I would never knowingly cheat. I’ve been tested my entire career, including eight last year, and I’ve never tested positive.”

“I accept MLB’s decision and take responsibility,” the outfielder said.

The news shocks the Atlanta Braves, who signed Jurickson Profar in January 2025 for 3 years and $42 million after a standout season with the San Diego Padres in 2024.

His arrival was key to reinforce the outfield, especially after the prolonged injury of Ronald Acuña Jr.

With Jurickson Profar out and Acuña still recovering, the team will have to turn to Dominican Bryan De La Cruz as the primary replacement in the outfield.

This adds pressure on the coaching staff to keep up the competitive pace in the National League East Division.
