U.S. President Donald Trump insisted Friday that he will intervene in the state of Minnesota to stop protests against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “if he is forced to” and assured that if he does, he will resolve the situation “quickly and effectively.”

“If I am forced to act, I will resolve it quickly and effectively,” Trump assured in a message on his social network, Truth Social.

He accused the “rioters, agitators and insurgents” who are demonstrating against the presence of the agents in the city of being “highly paid professionals”.

“The governor and the mayor don’t know what to do, they have totally lost control and, at this moment, they are leaving us useless!” he added.

The president’s message comes a day after he threatened to activate the Insurrection Act in the state if attacks against ICE continue.

“If Minnesota’s corrupt politicians will not obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists who are attacking ICE patriots, who are just trying to do their jobs, I will invoke the Insurrection Act, something many presidents have done before me,” he wrote.

This 1807 regulation is one of the most powerful emergency powers that allows the President to deploy the Army to repress episodes of civil disorder.

The last time it was used was in 1992 under George H.W. Bush (1989-1993) in California in response to civil unrest in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four white police officers accused of beating an African-American driver. Since the president deployed the immigration agents to Minneapolis, despite opposition from Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz, one woman has died after being shot several times by one of the officers and one man was shot in the leg by another.

Locals have taken to the streets to protest against ICE agents.

Among other things, they have thrown fireworks at the troops after the latter used tear gas and stun grenades to deter them.

Dozens of people have been arrested for clashes with officers during the protests.
