Mexican Sergio Checo Pérez, who finished eighth in the 2024 World Drivers’ Championship with Red Bull, is currently out of Formula 1. At the age of 35, the driver from Guadalajara is reflecting on his future and does not rule out a return to the championship if an attractive proposal arises.
In an interview with F1.com published at the end of March 2025, Perez made it clear that he is in no hurry to decide: “I will take at least six months to decide my future when I have all the proposals on the table”.
Will he be back?
Checo Perez has been clear about his criteria for returning to Formula 1:
He will not do it just to be on the grid, but if he finds a competitive project that allows him to enjoy the competition.
“If there is a project that makes sense to me and that I can enjoy, I could come back,” said the Mexican, who has six wins and 39 podiums in his F1 career.
Although he did not reveal the names of the teams, he confirmed that there have been approaches and preliminary proposals.
“I’m glad that teams are still interested, because in Formula 1 people have short memories.”
More relaxed and reflective

Away from the intense Formula 1 calendar, Checo Pérez has taken the opportunity to rest and reconnect with his personal life:
“It’s been great to have so much time off. Once you get out, you realize how many things you had given up.”
During this time he has also closely followed Red Bull and his replacement in the team, New Zealander Liam Lawson, as well as Japan’s Yuki Tsunoda, who has shown better performance.
Checo expressed his confidence in Tsunoda: “He has the talent, the speed, the mentality…I’m confident he will do well.”

Checo Pérez is considered one of the most influential Mexican sportsmen of the 21st century, especially for his career as the most successful Mexican driver in the history of Formula 1.
