An armed attack that occurred on Tuesday night, June 24, in the municipality of Irapuato, Guanajuato, left at least 11 people dead and several wounded, according to an official statement from the local Secretariat of Citizen Security. The aggression occurred in Barrio Nuevo, where neighbors were celebrating the feast of San Juan Bautista, one of the most traditional religious festivities in the area.
According to preliminary reports, four people died at the scene of the attack, while six others died while being transported to hospitals or receiving medical attention. One more died hours later. Witnesses indicated that gunmen fired directly at the crowd without warning, causing panic among those present.

Suddenly, multiple gunshots are heard and the crowd is seen running or throwing themselves to the ground to protect themselves.
The images, widely shared, are evidence of the level of violence that has once again hit Guanajuato.

Joint operation without results

Following the attack, state and federal security forces deployed a joint operation with elements of the Secretariat of National Defense(SEDENA), the National Guard, the Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office and the Municipal Police.

Although it was assured that work is underway to locate those responsible, as of the closing of this article, no information has been provided on persons detained.
The Center for Integral Attention to Victims (CAIV) also provided psychological and legal support to the families, as well as assistance in filing complaints.
Epicenter of violence in Mexico

According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Guanajuato was the state with the highest number of intentional homicides in 2024, with 3,151 of the 30,057 cases registered nationwide.
Most of these crimes are related to the dispute between criminal groups for the control of drug trafficking and extortion.
Despite the efforts of the three levels of government, massacres in public spaces, even during religious celebrations, continue to be common in several areas of the state.
