Sony announced Wednesday that it will raise the price of all three models of the PlayStation 5 only in the United States because of the “difficult economic environment” in the country, implicitly alluding to the trade war being waged by President Donald Trump.
“Like many global companies, we continue to experience a difficult economic environment. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. effective August 21,” the company explained in a statement.
As he explained the new retail price of the PlayStation 5 will be $549.99, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will be $499.99 and the PlayStation 5 Pro will be $749.99.
However, they clarified that the price of accessories for this console does not suffer any change. The same applies to other markets, which are also unaffected.
This decision, although not specified in the statement, lies in the protectionist measures that Trump has been ordering since April 2, on what he dubbed ‘Liberation Day’.
The levies it has ordered against most of the world’s territories have had a major impact on some industries that export to the U.S., such as Asian technology companies, and these tariffs would have affected a giant in the sector such as Sony.
Japan and the U.S. reached a trade agreement last July in which they established that imported Japanese goods will be subject to a 15% tariff.
This is the second time the company has faced complications since its launch in November 2020. The first was during the pandemic, when it faced a supply crisis in the international supply chain, EFE reported.
