The American point guard Jeremy Lin, one of the protagonists of the remembered stage known as ‘Linsanity’ in the NBA, announced Sunday his retirement from professional basketball after a fifteen-year career, in a statement released on the Chinese social network Weibo.

“As a professional athlete we always know that retirement is near. Today it’s my turn to say goodbye to basketball and it’s the hardest decision of my life,” said the 37-year-old, who became the first American of Chinese and Taiwanese descent to achieve notoriety in the U.S. league.

Jeremy Lin said that having competed “under the brightest spotlights” and against top-level opponents was “the greatest honor” of his life and that he was able to defy prejudices about his physique: “I fulfilled the dream I thought was impossible as a child, to play in front of fans from all over the world”.

The point guard thanked the support received throughout his career, marked by the global phenomenon he unleashed in 2012 with the New York Knicks, and stressed that at every stage he remained “that kid who feels happy and full of energy every time he touches a ball.”

“It’s a stage that I didn’t want it to end, but I know the time has come. I will cherish every memory and let’s move forward together to what’s next,” concluded Jeremy Lin, 2019 NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors, according to information from EFE.
