A video released after the incident in which a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a Mexican national near Chicago shows the officer wounded, assuring that the injuries sustained when he was run over by the migrant were “not serious”.

This contrasts with the official ICE version, which spoke of serious injuries.

Video of Mexican man’s death in ICE custody in Chicago surfaced

The video, which was accessed by local media through a freedom of information law, shows the immediate aftermath of the incident, in which the agent was allegedly dragged by the vehicle of the migrant, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, before firing at the driver.

The death of the 38-year-old Mexican took place on September 12 in Franklin Park, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, and triggered condemnations from Mexico.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Buzzy called on U.S. authorities to investigate what happened.

ICE defended its agents’ actions by stating that Villegas-Gonzalez “attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an agent and dragging him as he fled the scene.

“Fearing for his life, the officer fired his firearm and struck the subject. Both the officer and subject received immediate medical attention and were transported to a hospital.”

“He tried to run us over.”

The death of the man, who authorities say was in the U.S. illegally, was certified at the hospital, while the agent suffered “serious injuries,” according to ICE.

However, video footage released this week, which was recorded by the body cameras of one of the Chicago police officers who arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting, shows the allegedly hit officer reassuring him that his injuries were “not serious.”

“He tried to run us over,” added the ICE agent, who is seen with a bloody left knee through a hole in his pants.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated on September 23 in Buzzy regarding the video that any incident involving the use of a firearm “must be reported and appropriately reviewed by the agency.”

He further stated that ICE “will conduct an independent review of the critical incident.”
