The President of the United States, Donald Trump, declared on Wednesday, October 15, that he is studying the possibility of carrying out attacks against drug trafficking in Venezuelan territory, after sinking several alleged drug trafficking vessels at sea.

“I don’t want to tell you exactly, but we are certainly considering land now because we have the sea under control,” the president responded during a press conference in the Oval Office.

Likewise, Trump confirmed, as previously announced by The New York Times, that he authorized the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuela.

This is because, he said, the country’s leaders have “emptied their prisons” to send prisoners to the United States.

He also accused Caracas of trafficking drugs into U.S. territory.

When asked by a journalist whether he authorized the CIA to “eliminate” Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the American said it would be “ridiculous” to answer that question.

“I think Venezuela is feeling pressure, but I think many other countries are feeling pressure as well,” he said.

The Republican justified the bombings against several boats in the Caribbean, stating that the Coast Guard interdictions “never worked”.

He further stated that each of these vessels carries enough drugs for thousands of people to die from overdoses.

“It’s hard but you lose three people (alleged drug traffickers) and save 25,000,” he said.

According to The New York Times, Trump has authorized the CIA to conduct operations in Venezuela as well as in the Caribbean, in an increase of its actions against the government of Nicolás Maduro, with a view to overthrowing him.

However, it is not yet known if the agency is already planning any action, or if they are conceived as a contingency plan.

In recent weeks, the United States has attacked several vessels – which Washington claims were carrying drugs – on international coasts near Venezuela, operations that have cost the lives of approximately thirty people.

The Trump Administration accuses Maduro of leading the Cartel of the Suns, something the Caracas government strongly rejects and denounces a campaign of intimidation by the United States.
