U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he “does not believe” that the United States will go to war with Venezuela, but avoided confirming or denying whether his government has plans to attack, both in an interview with CBS and in statements to the press.
In an interview on CBS’s ’60 Minutes,’ asked if the U.S. is “going to war with Venezuela,” Trump replied, “I doubt it. I don’t think so. But we have been treated very badly”, after which he mentioned drug trafficking and illegal immigration of Venezuelan criminals to his country.

Later, when asked by journalist Norah O’Donnell about possible U.S. attacks on targets in Venezuelan territory, Trump responded that he did not want to say “whether it is true or not” and added that he would not reveal “to a reporter whether I am going to attack or not”.
Earlier, when descending from Air Force One and asked about possible concrete U.S. plans for an attack on Venezuela, he responded in a similar manner.
“How can I answer a question like that? Are there plans for an attack in Venezuela? Who would say that? Assuming there are, would I tell you, honestly? Yes, we have plans. We have very secret plans,” he said, again criticizing the questioning.
“Look, we’ll see what happens with Venezuela,” he said, after which he took up the argument that the Venezuelan government “sent thousands of people from prisons, mental institutions, and drug addicts.”
In the CBS interview, pressed about the presence of an aircraft carrier, referring to the larger and more sophisticated USS Gerald Ford, which may suggest an airborne operation, Trump snidely replied that “it has to be somewhere, it’s so big.”
Generally, Trump interrupted the journalist talking about immigration every time she tried to take up the questions and avoided giving concrete answers, although when asked about “whether (Venezuelan President Nicolás) Maduro’s days are numbered”, he was quick: “I would say yes, I think so”.
Trump, and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, denied on Friday that the United States is preparing to attack Venezuela, despite the undisputed increase in military pressure on Caracas.
