American actor, writer and film director Ethan Hawke, 54, will receive the Variety Virtuoso Award from the Miami Film Festival GEMS, at a ceremony to be held on November 2 in Miami.

“Renowned for bringing complex and provocative characters to life, Hawke continues to make his mark on the cultural landscape with fearless performances and unwavering artistic integrity,” the festival highlighted Wednesday in a statement.

This recognition, in collaboration with the cultural and entertainment magazine Variety, is a tribute to Hawke’s more than three decades of career in film, theater and television, playing characters that viewers never forget.

Among them is the captivating Jesse, from the trilogy ‘Before Sunrise’ (1995), ‘Before Sunset’ (2004) and ‘Before Sunset’ (2013), with his long and deep dialogues alongside French actress Julie Delpy.

As well as one of his first roles, in ‘Dead Poets Society’ (1989), alongside the legendary Robin Williams, or his Oscar-nominated performance as a rookie narcotics cop in Los Angeles, in the film ‘Training Day’ (2001).

The renowned actor will also participate in a Q&A session about his professional career, moderated by Variety’s co-editorial director, American journalist Ramin Setoodeh.

“With more than 70 film credits – we all have a favorite Ethan Hawke movie – and a career that spans television, theater, directing and even literature, he represents the artist who constantly reinvents himself. There is no one more deserving of the award,” Setoodeh noted.

Likewise, Miami Film Festival (MFF) programming director Lauren Cohen noted that the actor “has built one of the most dynamic and enduring careers in contemporary cinema”.

“His impressive versatility in film, television and theater has left a lasting impression on audiences around the world,” he noted.

Among his latest projects, the actor stars in and executive produces the drama series ‘The lowdown’, which will premiere on September 23 on FX.

Hand in hand with their trusted ally, American film director Richard Linklater, author of the ‘Before Sunrise’ trilogy and ‘Boyhood’ (2014), among other projects they have worked on together, on October 17 they will release their next film hand in hand, titled ‘Blue Moon’.

Hawke will attend the GEMS ceremony on Sunday, November 2, the fall edition of the MFF, which will be held from October 29 to November 5.

The event presents a selection of the films it considers the most outstanding GEMS (gems) of the year, which will receive an honorary award at Miami Dade County College’s Wolfson Auditorium.

This festival, organized by the same university, is one of the main platforms for Ibero-American cinema in the United States, reported Agencia EFE.
