The series ‘The House of the Spirits’, an adaptation of the work by Chilean writer Isabel Allende, will be presented at the 76th edition of the Berlinale as part of its ‘Special Series’ section and will star Mexican actor Alfonso Herrera.

The Prime Video production is comprised of eight episodes in which Herrera will play Esteban Trueba, the authoritarian patriarch of the family, considered one of the most complex and emblematic male characters in Latin American literature.

The 42-year-old actor has worked with Mexican film legends such as Luis Estrada and is now part of the cast of this series developed by Francisca Alegría, Fernanda Urrejola and Andrés Wood and executive produced by actress Eva Longoria.

“This project is born out of respect for memory, dialogue and the possibility of finding ourselves from what we are today, without losing what we were,” Herrera said in a statement about this project that brings to life the novel of the same name by Allende, the most widely read Latin American writer in the Spanish-speaking world.

He also emphasized that this story “is a reflection of us, a reflection of Latin America”.

“Bringing to the screen a story like ‘La casa de los espíritus’ that although set in Chile resonates from the Rio Bravo to Patagonia, has been a privilege for me,” he stressed.

The series is another attempt to film narratives with a regional cultural impact, although it also stands out for its international cast, which includes Spanish actress Nicole Wallace, who plays Clara del Valle in her youth, while Argentine Dolores Fonzi plays the character’s mature stage.

The cast also includes Spaniards Maribel Verdú and Eduard Fernández, as well as Mexico’s Fernanda Castillo and Chile’s Antonia Zegers.

‘La casa de los espíritus’ is a family saga published in 1982 that traces several decades of Chilean history through three generations of women in the Trueba family, interweaving political drama, historical memory and magical realism.

This series will share a section at the Berlinale, which will take place in Berlin from February 12 to 22, reported Agencia EFE, with other titles from different countries, such as the Spanish ‘Ravalear’ and the western ‘The Weight’, starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe.
