With just days to go before the April 5, 2025 deadline, tech giant Amazon submitted a formal bid to acquire TikTok in the United States, according to an exclusive report published by The New York Times. The move comes amid growing tensions over the social network’s continued presence on U.S. soil due to national security concerns.

The proposal was reportedly sent through an official letter addressed to J.D. Vance, U.S. Vice President, and Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, in which Amazon is postulated as an interested buyer of the U.S. operations of TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

Despite Amazon’s proposal to buy TikTok, sources close to the White House say the government does not appear to be serious about the offer, at least for now.

According to The New York Times, the Trump administration would be evaluating multiple options before making a final decision on the future of the social network in the US.

President Donald Trump, who has publicly expressed his desire to avoid a total ban on TikTok, convened a meeting with senior cabinet officials for this Wednesday, April 2.

The final decision must be made by Saturday, April 5.

This day is the deadline set by the administration for TikTok to disassociate itself from its Chinese owner or be blocked in the US.

During his campaign, Trump promised to protect access to the app in the country.

This is on the condition that there is a transition of ownership to U.S. hands.
