Films starring stars such as Amy Adams (‘At the Sea’) or Juliette Binoche (‘Queen At Sea’), a delicate Japanese animation film (‘A New Dawn’) or a biopic about musician Bill Evans, will be part of the Berlinale’s official competition.

Festival director Tricia Tuttle on Tuesday presented the 22 films that will compete for the Golden Bear, including the latest work by Hungarian director Kórnel Mundruczo, the film starring Amy Adams.

It’s the story of a woman who returns home after going through rehab and has to confront the damage she caused earlier. The actress is “absolutely mesmerizing” in this role, Tuttle noted of the new film by Mundruczo, known for ‘Pieces of a Woman’ (‘Fragments of a Woman’, 2020).

Another outstanding title in this edition is ‘Queen at Sea’, starring Juliette Binoche and Tom Courtenay, by Lance Hammer (‘Ballast’, 2008), a “tender story” about dementia and the ethical dilemmas of aging.

While Australian Markus Schleinzer’s ‘Rose’ is a transgender drama set in the 17th century, in black and white, starring Germany’s Sandra Hüller, who was nominated for an Oscar for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (2023).

In the competition there will be one animation title, the Japanese film ‘A New Dawn’, by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, the first solo work of this director who participated in titles such as ‘Your Name’ (2016) or ‘The Pokémon Movie: Secrets of the Jungle’ (2020).

A film that “beautifully captures the colors of the Japanese countryside” in a story about a group of young people facing the problems of climate change.

The figure of legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans is the focus of Grant Gee’s film ‘Everybody Digs Bill Evans’, in which the musician is played by Anders Danielsen and features Laurie Metcalf and Bill Pullman in the cast.

And Finnish director Hanna Bergholm’s ‘Nightborn’ will feature Rupert Grint, the fondly remembered Ron Weasley from the ‘Harry Potter’ saga, as a man who moves with his partner to his childhood home in a Finnish forest.

According to Agencia EFE, there are 22 films in the competition, including three Latin American films – ‘Moscas’ by Mexican Fernando Eimbcke, ‘Rosebush Pruning’ by Brazil’s Karim Aïnouz and ‘Josephine’ by Brazilian-American Beth de Araújo – and no Spanish films.
