Sony Pictures Television has announced Carlota, a historical series that will explore the life of Carlota of Habsburg, the only empress of Mexico.
The project has been catalogued as one of the company’s most ambitious productions in Latin America, both for its scale of production and for the historical relevance of the figure it deals with.
The plot will seek to show not only the political dimension of the Second Mexican Empire, but also the intimate side of a woman who faced complex personal and cultural challenges.
Actress and singer Belinda, 35, publicly shared her enthusiasm through social networks. For her, this role represents one of the most important and desired of her recent career:
“I have been dreaming about this project for more than 2 years… and there were times when I thought it wouldn’t happen. Today it is a reality. I still can’t believe it! I’m going to play Carlota, the last empress of Mexico, in Sony’s new series, and I have no words to describe what this means to me.”
Her statement reflects the emotional weight that the artist gives to this opportunity, considering it a significant acting challenge and a key moment in her professional career.
The series will consist of ten 45-minute episodes. Throughout the season, the series will cover Carlota’s journey from her arrival in Mexico with her husband, Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg, full of ideals and expectations, to the clash with a political and social reality marked by internal tensions and national resistance.
The narrative will not only focus on the historical facts, but will also explore the feelings of the protagonist and her complex love story, with an approach that seeks to challenge traditional molds and bring the audience closer to her more human side.
The series led by Belinda has international cast

The project will feature a cast of well-known figures in the audiovisual industry:
Jaime Lorente(La Casa de Papel) will play Maximilian of Habsburg, emperor of Mexico and husband of Carlota.
Miguel Ángel Silvestre(Sense8) will play Alfred Van Der Smissen.
Mabel Cadena(Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) will play Josefa.
The presence of these actors, with consolidated careers in international productions, reinforces the global character that the series seeks to project.
It will be directed by Alejandro Bazzano, known for his work in La Casa de Papel, and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos, who has been featured in projects such as Como agua para chocolate.
Both will bring their experience in large-scale storytelling and film-quality productions.
Filming will take place in locations in Mexico, Colombia and Spain, which will allow for a more realistic and visually rich recreation of the scenes that were part of Carlota and Maximiliano’s life.
Sony Pictures Television is committed to a visual and narrative approach with international standards.
The objective is to attract audiences from different regions, showing a story deeply rooted in the history of Mexico, but with a universal outlook.
With this, the Carlota series aims to consolidate itself as a proposal capable of competing in the global panorama of high-level historical productions.
