Betrayal or strategy? Russia leaks intelligence to Iran to attack US forces.

Russia is providing Iran with intelligence on the location of U.S. military forces and assets, including warships and aircraft, in the Middle East war, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched the war last Saturday, Moscow has provided Tehran with several locations that have enabled it to launch precise strikes on U.S. targets in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere, the newspaper said, citing three unnamed officials familiar with the intelligence information.

Russia helps Iran with intelligence

The Post’s information contrasts with the public stance of the Kremlin, whose spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Thursday that the conflict over Iran is not its war and that Russia must look out for its own benefit.

The Washington Post asserts that it is unclear to what extent Russia is helping Iran, and that Iranian capabilities to locate U.S. forces are slowly declining, according to the cited officials.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Friday in an interview with NBC that China and Russia are “supporting Iran politically and in other ways,” without giving further details, adding that military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran “has never been a secret.”

What does Trump say?

For his part, President Donald Trump on Friday avoided commenting on local media reports that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence on the locations and movements of U.S. troops, ships and aircraft.

“What a dumb question! We’re talking about something else,” the president told a Fox News reporter during a White House event on college sports.

Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, asked about Russian aid to Iran, said she could not comment on “intelligence reports leaked to the press,” but that in any case this alleged aid is not having any impact on the offensive.

“It is clearly not having any impact on military operations in Iran, because we are completely decimating them. We are achieving the military objectives of this operation and this will continue,” he assured.

Moscow has condemned the US and Israeli attacks on its ally Iran, but has avoided delving too deeply into its criticism of US President Donald Trump, in what many analysts interpret as a need to preserve its bargaining chips with Washington over the war in Ukraine.

Experts consulted by The Washington Post recalled that Iran has only a few military-grade satellites and no satellite constellation, so having the Kremlin’s space capabilities would be a huge advantage, and agreed that its first strikes have been very precise and sophisticated.

The Kremlin’s eye on the Gulf

The revelation is critical: Iran has few military satellites of its own. According to experts consulted, the “sophisticated” precision of recent Iranian attacks suggests that Tehran is using Moscow’s satellite constellation.

This contrasts with statements by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who only yesterday said that Russia should look out only for its own benefit in this conflict.
