Colombian singer Carlos Vives presented on Tuesday his new single ‘Buscando el mar’, a long-awaited collaboration with Dominican Juan Luis Guerra that pays tribute to the literary universe of Gabriel García Márquez and takes as inspiration ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’.

The song takes up the story of the mythical town of Macondo and transforms it into a musical tale about the search, nostalgia and freedom, according to a press release.

The song was created by Carlos Vives, Carlos Gardel and Hugo Huertas as a tribute to the Colombian Nobel Prize winner, using the figure of a character who longs to reach the sea as a metaphor for freedom.

The proposal combines Caribbean and pop rhythms with an instrumentation that includes percussions, guitars and piano.

“During the construction of the song, the intention arose to work with the maestro Juan Luis Guerra, to whom the idea was sent, which was received with enthusiasm, joining with his 440 (group) to the final result of this mixture of his characteristic joy and the nostalgia of the characters of Macondo, especially that of the man who was looking for the sea,” said Vives in the note.

The song, which initially bore the name ‘La ciénaga del tiempo’, evolved into ‘Buscando el mar’ after the incorporation of Guerra, who proposed the new title.

The track also has a special emotional value for Vives, as it includes Egidio Cuadrado’s last accordion performance before his death.

“Yo sigo buscando el mar y tu corazón no está en esta barca perdida en la soledad / Yo sigo buscando el mar y tu corazón no está, como quisiera en la vida volver a empezar”, says the chorus.

“I have admired Carlos’ music and career for many years, as well as Colombian music. This collaboration between Carlos and I was long overdue. This is the perfect time and the perfect song to sing together,” said Juan Luis Guerra.

The release is accompanied by a video that combines images from the past and present of both artists along with the lyrics of the song.

‘Buscando el mar’ is the second advance of ‘El último disco’, an album conceived as a collection of songs to share and remember essential values.

Prior to this premiere, Vives presented ‘Te dedico’, an intimate proposal centered on gratitude and a return to the essential, reported Agencia EFE.
