On June 22, 2025, the United States launched Operation Midnight Hammer, targeting three key nuclear facilities in Iran: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.

The mission involved more than 125 aircraft, including seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, which deployed 14 30,000-pound GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs designed to penetrate reinforced subway structures.

In addition, more than 24 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from U.S. submarines.

The main target was the Fordow uranium enrichment plant, located more than 80 meters underground.

According to the Pentagon, the bombs hit accurately, causing significant damage.

The Trump administration and the CIA claim that the attacks completely destroyed the facilities, setting back the Iranian nuclear program by years.

But preliminary reports from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) suggest that the damage may have been less severe, allowing Iran to rebuild in a matter of months.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that the centrifuges at Fordow were rendered inoperable, but expressed concern about the lack of access for a full assessment.

On June 23, 2025, in retaliation for U.S. strikes, Iran launched short- and medium-range ballistic missiles against the U.S. military base Al Udeid in Qatar, the largest U.S. base in the Middle East.

The operation, named Glad Tidings of Victory, was executed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Qatar reported that its air defense systems successfully intercepted the missiles, and no casualties were reported.

However, the attack was condemned by Qatar as a violation of its sovereignty and international law.

International reactions and consequences

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared that the attack was a “strong slap” to the United States and warned about Iran’s ability to attack U.S. bases in the region.

The international community expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict, with calls for moderation and a return to diplomatic negotiations.

President Donald Trump, for his part, downplayed the Iranian response, calling it “very weak” and expressed his desire to move toward peace.

On June 23, President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, to take effect the following day.

Trump labeled the conflict the “12-Day War” and declared that, if the cessation of hostilities was met, the war would be considered officially over.

Although there was initial skepticism about the implementation of the ceasefire, on June 24, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel accepted Trump’s ceasefire proposal, thanking the U.S. president for his mediation.

The ceasefire was brokered by the United States and Qatar, and although some minor violations were reported in the hours after it went into effect, the truce has been largely respected by both sides.
