Born in New York in 1979 and raised in Los Angeles, Dorner graduated with a degree in political science and served in the Navy (reserve) before joining the LAPD in 2006.

His career seemed unblemished, but in 2008 he filed allegations of brutality against his training officer.

Despite his military and police prestige, he was dismissed in 2009 for alleged falsehoods, an accusation he vehemently denied.

The manifesto: from the FBI to “asymmetric warfare”.

In February 2013, Dorner shared an 11,000-word manifesto on social media, where he outlined his disillusionment with the LAPD, accusing it of racist conspiracy and breach of trust.

It included threats against specific officers and their families, announcing an “asymmetric war” to publicly demand a review of their dismissal.

Dorner’s scheme began on February 3 with the murder of a former LAPD captain’s daughter, along with her partner, in Irvine.

In the following days, he killed one agent in Riverside and injured others.

Their violent acts generated a federal alert, extending the manhunt across five Southern California counties.

The response was swift: special patrols were deployed, protectors were deployed for dozens of potential victims, and a package he sent to CNN triggered a full-scale investigation.

The governor offered a prize of US$1 million to anyone who helped capture him.

On February 12, Dorner locked himself in a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The police used incendiary grenades, which caused the structure to catch fire.

There, after a shootout, he reportedly died by suicide.

Lessons and scars for the LAPD

A subsequent police report found serious failures in interagency coordination and in the management of civilians near high-risk areas.

The affair reopened debates on institutional corruption, structural racism and public accountability.

Crime Cases with The Sergeant offers a more than chronological presentation: with interviews, historical audio and expert analysis from The Sergeant.

This episode contextualizes the episode as a paradigmatic case of institutional trauma turned personal tragedy.

It reveals the transformation of an exemplary officer into the main target of the police, and exposes the cracks in the system that were never healed.
