Julio César Chávez Jr., one of the most controversial and talked about names in Mexican boxing in recent years, will return to the ring on January 24, 2025, when he faces Argentinean Ángel Julián Sacco in San Luis Potosí. The announcement marks the return of the son of the legend after his June 2024 loss to American boxing influencer and boxer Jake Paul, a bout that generated strong criticism and divided opinions among fans and analysts.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s return comes in the midst of a complex personal and legal situation. The former champion is currently on probation after he was arrested and deported from the United States in August 2024 due to a criminal investigation related to alleged ties to organized crime. Although the case is still ongoing, Chavez Jr. has reiterated in several interviews that he is focused on getting his life back on track and recovering his sports career.

During the press conference to announce the fight, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was more reflective and self-critical than at other times in his career.

“Boxing saved my life, thanks to boxing I am here talking to you in a coherent way,” he told the media.

He also acknowledged that most of his personal and professional problems were due to the early fame and expectations he inherited as the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, considered the greatest Mexican boxing idol.

“For being young, for being immature, for being Julio César Chávez’s son, for the money I earned, for being in bad shape… but that’s all history,” he said.

Chavez Jr. said that this new cycle represents an opportunity to rebuild his career and demonstrate discipline in and out of the ring.

“I have two years to do what I didn’t do at the time. I’m not coming to do one more fight…”.

Angel Julian Sacco, originally from Argentina, arrives as a rival willing to ruin the return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Although not a media figure, he has built a solid career on the South American circuit.

This could complicate the Mexican if he is not in top physical and mental shape.

For millions of Mexicans and Latinos in the United States, Chavez Jr. continues to be a character that generates strong emotions:

Admiration, criticism and curiosity.

His return to boxing, in the midst of a court case and with a promise of change, will be closely watched by fans of the sport and those who have seen his career full of ups and downs.

The January 24 show could become a turning point: a rebirth… or a new chapter of controversy.
